David Michael Ungar is an American computer scientist known for co-creating the Self programming language with Randall Smith. He received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985, where he won the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. Ungar has held positions at Stanford University, Sun Microsystems, IBM Research, and Apple. He has over 20 US patents and was recognized with several awards for his contributions to programming languages and garbage collection, including the Dahl-Nygaard Senior Prize in 2009.
