David A. Thompson is a prominent American electrical engineer known for his contributions to magnetic recording technology. He completed a Bachelor's degree in 1962, a Master's in 1963, and a Ph.D. in 1966 at Carnegie Institute of Technology. In collaboration with Lubomyr Romankiw, he developed a magnetic head for thin magnetic films at IBM, earning a patent in 1981. Thompson has received numerous accolades, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2012.
