David John Southwood is a British space scientist, born on June 30, 1945. Currently, he serves as a Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London. Southwood was the President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2012 to 2014 and previously held the position of Director of Science and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency from 2001 to 2011. His research focuses on solar-terrestrial physics and planetary science, with particular interest in magnetospheres, and he contributed to the magnetic field instrument for the Cassini Saturn orbiter.
