David Poole (1925-1991) was a South African ballet dancer, choreographer, and ballet teacher who played a pivotal role in establishing South African ballet on an international level. Born in Cape Town, he trained under Dulcie Howes at the University of Cape Town Ballet School and joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet in London in 1947. He returned to South Africa in 1957, becoming a lecturer and choreographer at the same ballet school and later serving as the artistic director of Kruik Ballet. Poole created several notable ballets, including the first full-length South African ballet, 'The Square'.
