David Mercer was an English playwright and screenwriter born on June 27, 1928, in Wakefield, England. He served in The Royal Navy before studying at Kings College, Newcastle, graduating in 1953. Mercer gained recognition in the 1960s for his plays that explored social norms in British culture, notably his work on 'A Suitable Case for Treatment,' which later became a film. He collaborated with BBC director Don Taylor on several television projects and was portrayed as Malcolm Sloman in Trevor Griffiths' play 'The Party' in 1973.
