David Baltimore is an American biologist and academic administrator born on March 7, 1938, in New York City. He served as the President of the California Institute of Technology from 1997 to 2006 and currently holds the Robert Millikan Professorship in Biology at Caltech. Baltimore also presided over Rockefeller University in 1990 and 1991, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1975 for discovering reverse transcriptase, an enzyme crucial for retroviruses, including HIV.
