David Backes is an American author and professor born on May 14, 1957, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is renowned for his biography of Sigurd F. Olson, titled A Wilderness Within: The Life of Sigurd F. Olson, which won the Small Press Book Award in 1998 and received favorable attention from The New York Times. Backes served as a professor in the Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies department at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee until his retirement in 2015.
