David A. Johnston was an American volcanologist who worked with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). He was killed during the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington while monitoring the volcano. Johnston reported the eruption shortly before being caught in a lateral blast. Although his body was never found, his remains were discovered in 1993. He conducted research on various volcanoes across the United States and was respected for his analyses of volcanic gases. Following his death, a memorial fund was established in his name at the University of Washington.
