He was elected in the 2023 gubernatorial elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeating the incumbent governor. A prominent figure in the Nigerian banking sector, he has held key positions, including executive director for the Public Sector North at First Bank of Nigeria Plc. He took office as governor on May 29, 2023.
