He was murdered at the age of 23 on May 19, 1999, by an officer of the Carabineros de Chile during a student protest at the University of Tarapacá, where he was studying auditing. His death occurred during the administration of President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle amidst student mobilizations.
