She has qualified twice for the US Olympic Trials, competing in the 10,000 meters in 2004 and in the marathon in 2008. In 2007, she achieved a significant ranking of 16th in the nation for marathon running with a personal best time of 2:38:18. During the 2008 Olympic Marathon trials held in Boston, she finished in 30th place, completing the race in 2:41:31. Coons has a twin brother, Jason, who was involved in club lacrosse at James Madison University.
