Cynthia graduated with a geology degree from Skidmore College in 1978 and obtained a master's in geology from the University of Kansas in 1982 and an MBA from Harvard University in 1989. She became a Royal Academy of Engineering fellow in 2012 and was ranked one of the world's most powerful women by Forbes. She stepped down as CEO in October 2012 and has held various executive roles in the mining and oil industries.
