Vernon E. "Copy" Berg was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and an artist known for his significant role in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in the military. He was notable for being the first alumnus of the Naval Academy to actively oppose the discriminatory policies against homosexuality in the armed services. Following his suit against the Navy, which resulted in an other than honorable discharge in 1976, he influenced the military to adopt a policy that generally granted honorable discharges to homosexuals.
