He grew up in Bakersfield, starting his musical journey with piano before learning guitar and double bass in high school. In 1960, he moved to Los Angeles to study music and later became a professional musician, collaborating with notable artists like the Four Freshmen and Johnny Mathis. After a break for military service, Gieg relocated to Denver in 1970, where he played locally and at jazz events until his death on March 11, 2013.
