Dr. Claudio Bordignon is an Italian physician and pioneer in gene therapy, notable for performing the first gene therapy procedure using hematopoietic stem cells in 1992. His subsequent research led to the first successful treatment for adenosine deaminase deficiency (SCID) in 2002 and expanded into gene therapy for various genetic diseases and cancer immunotherapy. Bordignon served as the first President of the European Working Group on Human Gene Transfer and Therapy, now known as ESGCT, and was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2010.
