Charles Edward Backus, born on September 17, 1937, served as the vice president and provost of Arizona State University's east campus until his retirement in 2004. After retirement, he became the president of the Arizona State University Research Park, which is a business and recreational park in Tempe, Arizona, operated by the university. Backus has also contributed to the academic community by endowing a scholarship at Arizona State University's Polytechnic campus.
