He served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 2009 to 2013 after being elected to the Town of Newtown's Legislative Council in 2007, where he received the highest votes. Lyddy focused on issues related to Lyme disease treatment during his tenure in the state assembly. His husband, Erick Russell, was elected as Connecticut State Treasurer in 2022, marking a historic milestone as the first Black LGBT statewide officeholder in the U.S.
