He gained prominence when he left Credit Suisse in July 2000 following a negative stock market comment about Swissair. He served as a member of the St. Gallen Cantonal Council from spring 2008 until May 2012 representing the Swiss People's Party (SVP). He later returned to the Cantonal Council as the first substitute after Barbara Keller-Inhelder was elected to the National Council in October 2015.
