He previously served as the Commercial Director for Chelsea F.C. and London Resort. Townsend has been an independent Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, London since 2019, where he also chairs the gallery's Trading Company. In April 2020, he took on the Chief Executive role for the government's Shielding Programme, volunteering for four months during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic before joining KPMG.
