Charles K. Kao was a Chinese-born physicist and electrical engineer, known for his groundbreaking contributions to the transmission of light in optical fibers for optical communications. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 for his pioneering work in this field. Born in Shanghai in 1933, he completed his secondary education at St. Joseph's College in Hong Kong and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the College of Arts and Technology in 1957. He earned his PhD in electrical engineering from Imperial College London in 1965.
