Cecil Aronowitz (1916–1978) was a South African-born violist of Russian-Lithuanian descent. He founded the Melos Ensemble in 1950, debuting at the premiere of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. Britten composed Curlew River (1964) and Lachrymae (1976) specifically for him. In 1976, he and his wife, pianist Nicola Grunberg, gave the first public performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's 'Sonata for viola and piano' outside of Russia. Aronowitz was born on March 4, 1916, in King William’s Town and studied at the Royal College of Music after serving in WWII.
