Carol A. Mutter is a retired Lieutenant General of the United States Marine Corps, born on December 17, 1945, in Greeley, Colorado. She was the first woman to achieve the rank of Major General in the Marine Corps and subsequently the first woman to attain the rank of Lieutenant General in the entire United States Armed Forces. Mutter studied mathematics at the University of Northern Colorado before joining the Marine Corps in 1967, where she served as an instructor and platoon commander. She later became the first female Space Director in the US Space Command and retired from active service in 1999.
