He rose to prominence when he became chairman of the Shell Transport and Trading Company on July 1, 1976, and later assumed the role of chairman of the Committee of Managing Directors of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group on July 1, 1977. Pocock held these significant positions consistently until his death at the young age of 59.
