Carmen Casco de Lara Castro was a Paraguayan teacher and politician born on June 17, 1918, who became a prominent advocate for women's and human rights. She founded one of the earliest independent human rights organizations in Latin America and fought against state terrorism during Alfredo Stroessner's dictatorship. Elected to the constitutional assembly in 1967, she worked towards embedding basic human rights into the Paraguayan Constitution. As a member of Parliament and later the Senate, she focused on ending abuses and assisting victims of human rights violations. She passed away on May 8, 1993.
