Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova (1937-2023) was a high-ranking Salvadoran military officer who served as the head of the national guard from 1979 to 1983 and as Minister of Defense from 1983 to 1989. He was implicated in grave human rights violations, particularly the 1980 murders of four American nuns by national guardsmen under his command. Following their conviction, some guardsmen accused Vides and his cousin of orchestrating the murders, leading to legal efforts for his deportation. His actions during the Salvadoran Civil War remain widely criticized.
