He played a pivotal role in establishing historical osteology as an academic discipline in Sweden. Completing his Doctor of Medicine in 1945, he made significant contributions to liver surgery and transplantation techniques. His work included the first taxonomization of human facial movements, which influenced later studies in psychology. Hjortsjö's research on the Luttra Woman, a Neolithic bog body, further showcased his expertise in physical anthropology. He passed away on July 3, 1978.
