Carl Adam Petri was a German mathematician and computer scientist, born on July 12, 1926, in Leipzig and passed away on July 2, 2010. He was an honorary professor at the University of Hamburg and invented Petri nets in 1962 as part of his doctoral thesis on communication with automata at the University of Bonn. Petri significantly contributed to the advancement of parallel and distributed computing and introduced new concepts such as complex systems and workflow management. He officially retired in 1991 and was honored by the Queen of the Netherlands in 2003.
