C. William Harwood was an American conductor born on March 14, 1948, in Richmond, Virginia. He is best known for his work as an opera conductor, particularly noted for leading the Houston Grand Opera's groundbreaking national tour of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess in 1977. Additionally, Harwood conducted the world premieres of works by several renowned composers, including Claude Debussy, Frederick Delius, Stephen Paulus, and George Rochberg. He passed away on April 26, 1984, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
