Brockway McMillan was an influential American government official and scientist, serving as the eighth Under Secretary of the Air Force and the second Director of the National Reconnaissance Office. Born in 1915 in Minneapolis, he earned his Ph.D. from MIT and contributed significantly to information theory while working at Bell Labs. He held key roles in military research and satellite reconnaissance development and was an IEEE Fellow and past SIAM president. He had a notable naval career during WWII and remained active until his retirement in 1979, passing away at age 101 in 2016.
