She served as the mayor of Hvidovre Municipality from 1993 until October 2007, representing the Social Democrats. After training as an educator in 1985, she began her political career in 1986. Her tenure as mayor focused on integration issues and local development projects, such as transforming Avedørelejren into a film city. Christensen stepped down due to stress, but her time in office was known for political stability and the Social Democrats' stronghold in Hvidovre.
