Brian P. Schmidt (born February 24, 1967) is an astronomer and academic, currently serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Australian National University (ANU). He was previously a professor and researcher in astronomy and astrophysics. Schmidt is recognized for his work on using supernovae as cosmic indicators. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2012 and is a recipient of both the Shaw Prize in Astronomy in 2006 and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011, the latter awarded jointly with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess for evidence of the accelerating expansion of the universe.
