Brian David Josephson is an Irish physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973 alongside Japanese scientist Leo Esaki and Norwegian scientist Ivar Giaever. He was born on January 4, 1940, in Cardiff, Wales. Josephson is renowned for his discovery of the Josephson effect and has a strong focus on the theory of condensed matter. He retired in the autumn of 2007 from his position as a professor at the University of Cambridge.
