Botu, whose real name was Mahmud Maksudovich Khodiev, was an Uzbek Soviet poet, writer, journalist, and public figure born on May 15, 1904, in Tashkent, Russian Empire. He served as Deputy People's Commissar of Education of the Uzbek SSR and held various editorial roles. His works lauded the social changes under Soviet rule, with early writings reflecting national liberation themes. He was recognized in the 1929-1930 Literary Encyclopedia as a major and popular Uzbek poet, but faced repression in the 1930s and was posthumously rehabilitated in 1958.
