He played as a back in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) for four seasons with teams such as the New York Yankees and Chicago Hornets. Sweiger was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1942 NFL draft. He honed his football skills at the University of Minnesota after attending Central High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
