He is best known for his hit song 'Mustafa Ya Mustafa,' composed by Mohamed Fawzi, which topped charts in France and was popular in England for over 14 weeks in 1960. Azzam faced controversy with the song, being temporarily banned due to political implications. He moved to Switzerland in the 1960s and owned a nightclub in Geneva, where he continued to perform until his death on July 24, 2004.
