Bo Carpelan was a Finnish poet and writer born in Helsinki on October 25, 1926. He published his first collection of poems in 1946 and earned a doctorate in 1960. Writing primarily in Swedish, Carpelan created numerous poetry collections, novels, and short stories. He is notable for being the only recipient to have won the Finlandia Prize twice. One of his famous poems, "It Was a Difficult Winter," was later set to music by Uljas Salin.
