Bert Sam Wipiti was a New Zealand fighter pilot and flight commander during World War II. Born on January 16, 1922, in New Plymouth, he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) in 1941. He was the first Māori pilot to leave New Zealand for active service, being assigned to No. 243 Squadron in Singapore. After destroying five Japanese aircraft during the invasion of British Malaya, he was evacuated to Java in February 1942. He later flew with No. 485 Squadron in Europe and was killed in action while escorting bombers on a raid over France.
