Bert Leysen (1920-1959) was the first television program director of N.I.R. (now VRT) from 1953 to 1959. He studied Germanic Philology at the Catholic University of Leuven and worked as a radio reporter. He played a significant role in establishing television in Belgium, launching its first programming. Leysen aimed to introduce his audience to the world outside Belgium and co-founded Eurovisie. His tragic death in a car accident deeply affected Flanders, and he is remembered for his contributions to television and media in Belgium.
