Bernulf Kanitscheider (1939-2017) was a German philosopher and philosopher of science. He wrote about natural philosophy, mainly on questions of cosmology, philosophy of life, and an "enlightened hedonism." He studied philosophy, mathematics, and physics at the University of Innsbruck, where he received his doctorate in 1964 and his habilitation in 1970. He was a professor of philosophy of science at the University of Giessen from 1974 to 2007. Kanitscheider was a co-editor of the journals "Aufklärung und Kritik" and "Philosophia naturalis" and a member of the advisory boards of several other journals. He was also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation and the Science Council of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parapsychology and the Society for Critical Philosophy Nuremberg. In his natural philosophy, he advocated a consistent naturalism, according to which even the cultural achievements of man - the subject of the humanities - are merely "forms of organization of spontaneous order formation on an ontologically early layer of matter." Since the mid-1990s, the thematic focus of Kanitscheider's publications has shifted to practical philosophy. His book "The Hedonistic Manifesto" (2011) can be seen as the culmination of this period of his work. A central statement was, for example: "Julien Offray de La Mettrie was undoubtedly the most uncompromising and outspoken defender of joie de vivre among philosophers." Besides La Mettrie, it is above all the Marquis de Sade whose position on hedonism Kanitscheider repeatedly ventilated, also in "The Matter and Its Shadows" (2007). The La Mettrie scholar Bernd A. Laska criticized Kanitscheider's efforts to present Sade alongside La Mettrie as the progenitor of a hedonistic ethics as inconsistent. In many of his monographs, but especially in "A Little Philosophy of Mathematics," Kanitscheider argues that the formal rigor of mathematics can be a model and point of reference for science in general. To this end, he points out that the aporias of mathematics sometimes emphasized from a humanistic perspective (such as certain problems in set theory or the work of Kurt Gödel) neither fundamentally discredit the validity of mathematical-logical thinking, nor are they problems that cannot be formally precisely described. At the same time, he tries to show that scientific methods that are explicitly differentiated from formal logic, such as phenomenology, despite the contrary claims of phenomenologists, cannot reach the precision of mathematical-logical methods.
