He served as a professor at the Physical Institute of the University of Bern in the Climate and Environmental Physics department. Stauffer studied physics at ETH Zurich and obtained his doctorate in 1966 under Hans Oeschger. He contributed significantly to the methods for determining carbon dioxide and methane levels from air bubbles in ice cores, aiding in prehistoric climate reconstruction. He also led ice core projects in Greenland and Antarctica and received several awards, including the Weyprecht Medal and the Hans Oeschger Medal.
