He formed the group Family Four with his half-siblings in 1964, which performed until 1990 and won Melodifestivalen in 1971 and 1972. He was the son of musician Viktor Järnberg and singer Anna Öst. Berndt was married twice: first to Stina Johansson, with whom he had son Dan, and then to Ulla Blomqvist, with whom he had daughters Lena and Lili, both of whom became musicians.
