Benjamin Britten was an English composer, conductor, and pianist, central to 20th-century British classical music. He is known for a wide variety of works including operas, orchestral pieces, and chamber music. Among his most notable works are the opera Peter Grimes (1945), the War Requiem (1962), and The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1945). He was born in Suffolk, demonstrated musical talent early, studied at the Royal College of Music, and received private lessons from Frank Bridge. Britten also founded the Aldeburgh Festival in 1948.
