Ben Gascoigne (Sydney Charles Bartholomew) was an Australian astronomer born on November 11, 1915, in Napier, New Zealand. He was instrumental in the design of the Anglo-Australian Telescope, the largest optical telescope in Australia and one of the most significant astronomical facilities worldwide. Gascoigne earned a bachelor's and master's degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Auckland in 1937, followed by a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Bristol in 1941. He moved to Australia during World War II to work at the Commonwealth Solar Observatory in Canberra, specializing in optical device design.
