Beatrix of the Netherlands, born Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard on January 31, 1938, was the queen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands until April 30, 2013. She became the head of state in 1980 after her mother, Queen Juliana, abdicated. Beatrix married German Claus von Amsberg in 1966 and had three sons: Willem-Alexander, Constantijn, and Johan Friso. Willem-Alexander succeeded her as king. Beatrix announced her retirement on January 28, 2013, to take effect on King's Day, April 30, 2013.
