Subsequently, he became involved in humanitarian efforts, assisting Vietnamese refugees and working with the UN in Cambodia. Since 1994, he has been affiliated with human rights organizations in Asia. In recognition of his significant contributions to human rights, he received the Right Livelihood Award in 2014, highlighting his dedication to documenting and promoting human rights in the region.
