He played the tenor saxophone and jazz flute, developing a unique and soulful approach to modern jazz that drew from the township jive. Coetzee passed away on March 11, 1998, in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. His contributions to music have left a lasting impact, particularly in the South African jazz scene.
