Barbara Gittings (July 31, 1932 – February 18, 2007) was a prominent American LGBTQ rights activist. She led the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis from 1958 to 1963 and was an editor of its magazine from 1963 to 1966. In the 1960s, she collaborated with Frank Kameny in protests against laws prohibiting the employment of gay individuals by the U.S. government. In the 1970s, she contributed to the American Library Association, fostering positive literature about homosexuality. Gittings was instrumental in the movement to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness in 1972.
