Avram Hershko is an Israeli chemist and researcher born in Hungary on December 31, 1937. He moved to Israel in 1950 with his father after spending two years in Romania. Hershko obtained his medical degree in 1965 and completed his Ph.D. in 1969 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is currently an adjunct professor at New York University. In 2004, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Aharon Ciechanover and Aaron Klug, for their discovery of protein degradation processes in cells.
