Ashton Carter (September 24, 1954 - October 24, 2022) was an American physicist and former professor at Harvard University, who served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense. He held the position of Deputy Secretary of Defense from October 2011 to December 2013. Carter was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in February 2015. He was previously involved in defense policy during the Clinton administration and had extensive academic credentials in physics and security studies, authoring over 100 publications. He received the Distinguished Public Service Award for his work in national security.
