Arthur François Emile van Schendel was a prominent Dutch art historian and museum director, born on May 18, 1910, in Ede, and passing away on February 6, 1979, in Amsterdam. He is best known for his role as the General Director of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam from 1959 to 1975. Additionally, he served as President of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for two terms between 1965 and 1971. He was the son of Arthur van Schendel, a well-known Dutch writer of novels and short stories.
